Goodbye to glare
I get a lot of questions about polarized sunglasses. What does it mean, how does it work, what are the benefits to me? And do polarized sunglasses protect my eyes from harmful UV? (Short answer: Yes! And because of this, they’ll also protect the delicate skin around your eyes!)
Polarization is a process of filtering the wavelengths of light- usually with a special chemical treatment or film. Polarized film allows vertical wavelengths of light to go through the lens while blocking out the horizontal wavelengths that cause glare. {Think of light bouncing off of metallic surfaces, water, snow, or glass.} When we polarize the light, the benefit to you is color contrast, visual clarity, and glare protection without reduction of the essential light we need to see. Tinted lenses only darken your world; there is no added clarity or contrast. All polarized lenses protect against UV light— and side-note: any lens I dispense to you will absorb UV light whether it’s a clear lens, a photochromic lens or a sun lens. So stop squinting and struggling (and protect those eyes from wrinkles, too!): treat yourself to prescription sunglasses!
I prefer polarized lenses, but that doesn’t mean it’s best for you! For example, if you use instruments with polarized screens or LCD/LED screens, then polarized lenses will black out the screen 100% as all wavelengths of light are blocked. Many manufacturers have corrected for this, but some instruments and screens are still LCD or LED. You may also notice rainbow effects with your polarized lenses- think of your lenses as revealing various wavelengths of light; you get to see all the colors!
